The duties of a Field Heavy Equipment Mechanic include the following:
- Testing mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers’ specifications.
- Possessing strong troubleshooting capabilities with electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Operating and inspecting machines or heavy equipment in order to diagnose defects.
- Diagnosing faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
- Dismantling and reassembling heavy equipment using hoists and cranes.
- Cleaning, lubricating, and performing other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
- Examining parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
- Reading and understanding operating manuals, blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Overhauling and testing machines or equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
- Assembling gear systems and aligning frames and gears.
- Fitting bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
- Having welding and fabrication abilities, using Mig and Arc (stick) welders, including Oxy & Acetylene cutting and brazing.
